My TED Wish

(r] proxthink.com

The TED Prize was created as a way of taking the inspiration, ideas and resources that are generated at TED and using them to make a difference. Each winner is granted a wish. If I were to win a TED Prize, this would be my wish.

I wish that the ProxThink Growth Model would be adopted and adapted widely, and that it would become a viable evolution for capitalism and/or parallel process to capitalism. This wish would be aided by people becoming more and more: 1) honest and transparent with their ProxMonitors, 2) creative with their Vadi Agreements, 3) active about their RelatePoints, and 4) generous with their ProxRewards (proxri). This wish would be aided by widespread data and network availability to coordinate these four items, yet also widespread low-tech implementations as well. This wish would be aided by heightened senses of and qualities of relationships and boundaries, as well as heightened creativity, flexibility and fun, which the ProxThink Basics and ProxPatterns could serve and support, in addition to serving and supporting items 1 through 4 above. I believe progress towards this wish could serve us in our challenges with climate change, conflict at many scales, and growth along many dimensions, including personal growth and the growth of groups of people.

Play Situations Probabilistically

(r] proxthink.com

Since there are limits to (Limits of One) pretty much every element and every relationship in every situation and proximity, it makes sense to play situations probabilistically (Relate a Variety and Value of Some). This is a key lesson in life. Of course, this strategy has limits too.

In other words, you generally can’t depend on any one element for everything, but you can often depend on an element for some things. So don’t reject an element because it can’t do everything. Rather, keep that element for the some things it can do for your situation and the proximity.

ProxThink Hints Sampler

(r] proxthink.com

You can now try ProxThink Hints directly from the main home page at proxthink.com. We’ve made it so each time you enter some text and click ProxThink Hint, you get a different random hint. This is a sampler before you join.

ProxThink Hints can trigger ideas and action. Use them to consider possibilities and try things. A single hint may be valuable alone. However, a single hint has limits. Your hints are even more valuable in relationship with each other. Why? ProxThink Hints are created with ProxPatterns, a group of related patterns. They often work together and play off each other. So join here to access the full suite of ProxThink Hints.

Transitions as Doorways

(r] proxthink.com

Perhaps a good way to view personal transitions is as a doorway. When you go through a doorway, you move into a proximity that is pretty different from where or when you were.

Viewing personal transitions as doorways can work in mundane transitions, like getting up in the morning or starting a new project. It can also work for more major transitions, like changes in your life or beliefs or circumstances.

See your transition as a doorway. Move through the doorway into a new proximity.

Campaign Celebrations vs. Accomplishment Celebrations

(r] proxthink.com

Political primary celebrations are nice. Wouldn’t it be great if we took more occasions to celebrate real accomplishments, with parties and gusto?

These would be real accomplishments which benefit many people. Things like building a park, or the introduction of a mass market plug-in hybrid car, or hitting a target for carbon reduction (to slow climate change), or national health care, or halving homelessness, or a stronger sense of community through better ways for people to be engaged.

I believe the ProxThink Growth Model may provide a framework for ways to approach a number of these situations. People can start by creating more ProxMonitors to help us track situations, and RelatePoints to aid collaboration and communication. Then Difference Agreements can be crafted which help valuable differences persist, adapt and change as needed. People can ProxReward (proxri) as one part of implementing Difference Agreements.

Microsoft Offer for Yahoo and the ProxThink Growth Model

(r] proxthink.com

The Microsoft offer for Yahoo is a good reminder that growth and shareholders’ interests are primary. We now live in a world which increasingly requires that we think and act in ways related to the systems, environments and networks in which we are enmeshed. It is no longer clear that markets are up to this task.

As an example, as Øystein Dahle, former Vice President of Exxon for Norway and the North Sea, has observed: “Socialism collapsed because it did not allow the market to tell the economic truth. Capitalism may collapse because it does not allow the market to tell the ecological truth.”

It’s entirely possible that even in the markets in which Google, Microsoft and Yahoo play, people and elements related directly or indirectly by search and online advertising could be better served by frameworks which take the systems, environments and networks in which they are enmeshed, into account. The ProxThink Growth Model may be a step in that direction, since systems, environments and networks can be seen as proximities, and the proximity of situations play a prominent role in the model.
